Reduce your energy use and save

With people still reeling from their latest energy bills it’s more important than ever to use your energy wisely and reduce your use where possible. It will also save you money and is kinder to the environment!

Tips for reducing your energy use

Know which appliances use the most electricity and when is the best time to use them. If it makes things hot, and in a short period of time, then it will usually cost a lot. Electric showers, kettles, hair dryers, and tumble dryers are some of the costlier culprits.
Demand for electricity is highest between 7am-9am and 5pm-7pm, so try and avoid these times

  • Set your water heating to 65°C on your immersion heating
  • Turn down the thermostat to 20°C in the main living areas
  • Turn off the radiators in rooms you don’t use
  • Insulate your hot water pipes with foam tubing and make sure your hot water tank is also insulated
  • Use a lower temperature for your washing machine and dishwasher.Use full loads only when you need to and outside of peak times.
  • Hang your washing outside on the line and only use a clothes dryer when really necessary
  • Minimise oven use
  • Turn off lights and appliances when not in use
  • Unplug appliances and don’t leave them in standby mode
  • Use low energy LED lightbulbs
  • Don’t leave the fridge door open as it takes a long time for it to get back its normal temperature.

Buy high energy rated products when replacing home appliances. Even if the initial cost outlay is higher you will save money in the long run.
